Home / Maintenance schedule
Your year-round AC maintenance schedule
The Imperial Valley has two seasons for cooling equipment: getting ready, and running hard. Here's what to do and when.
January–February: plan ahead
- Book your spring tune-up now, while HVAC companies have openings.
- Replace thermostat batteries.
- If your system is aging, get replacement estimates now instead of during a summer breakdown.
March: spring tune-up
- Professional tune-up before the first 100°F days.
- Fresh filter.
- Clear 2 feet around the outdoor unit and rinse the coil.
April: swamp cooler startup
- New or cleaned pads, scrubbed pan, pump and float check. See the swamp cooler guide.
- Test the AC on the first warm day so you find problems before the heat.
May–September: peak season
- Check the filter every month and change it when it's gray.
- Flush the condensate drain with vinegar every few months.
- Rinse the outdoor coil after dust storms.
- Watch for ice on the copper lines, warm air, or short cycling, and turn the system off and call a pro if you see them.
October: wind down
- Shut down, drain and cover swamp coolers.
- Change the filter after the long season.
November–December: heating check
- Heat pumps and furnaces get a quick check before cool nights.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors if you have gas heat.
