AC maintenance in Calexico, CA

Keeping older homes and window units cool

City: Calexico, CAZIP: 92231Peak season: May–September

Calexico sits right on the border, across from Mexicali, and many of its neighborhoods are older, close-set homes. That mix of central systems, wall units and window units each needs slightly different care.

Anyone who crosses at the Calexico West Port of Entry knows how much heat comes off the pavement in July. Outdoor AC units in tight side yards and against block walls deal with the same thing: trapped hot air they have to keep pulling back in.

What to watch for in Calexico

Airflow around the outdoor unit. A condenser boxed in by walls, fences or stored items recirculates its own hot air and works much harder. Keep at least 2 feet clear on all sides and nothing stacked on top.

Window and wall units. Pull and wash the front filter every two weeks in summer. Make sure the unit tilts slightly to the outside so water drains out rather than into the wall.

Older central systems. Systems over 12–15 years old benefit most from a spring tune-up. They're also the ones most likely to use older refrigerant that's expensive to recharge, so catching a slow leak early saves money.

How often to service your system in Calexico

  • Central AC filter: every 30–60 days from May to September.
  • Window unit filter: rinse every 2 weeks during heavy use.
  • Tune-up: every spring, before the April warm-up.
  • Outdoor coil: rinse gently 2–3 times a year with the power off.
